Ladies and Gentlemen:
The following is an update of
West Nile Virus Activity in
Indiana as reported through our
surveillance system:
As of October 12, 2005 15 human
cases of West Nile Virus have
been reported from 7 counties.
These are Allen (2), Clark (1),
Clinton (1), LaPorte (2), Lake
(5), Madison (1), and Porter
(3).
Forty seven positive birds have
been detected of 89 tested from
31 counties. These positives
were from 21 counties.
As of this date, 66,346
mosquitoes have been tested from
75 counties. One hundred
and eighty three positive pools
have been reported.
Mosquitoes are still active
throughout the State. Aedes
albopictus populations do not
seem to have been fazed by lower
temperatures in backyards in
Indianapolis. Gravid Culex
mosquitoes are still being
caught in gravid traps. In
other words, there are still
infected mosquitoes seeking
hosts. People should, therefore
not forget about taking
precautions against being bitten
even though this is October.
We will keep you informed of
further developments as they
occur.
